Licensing Examination

NATIONAL LICENSING EXAMINATIONS

National Examination Background and Information

National Alliance of Canadian Optician Regulators (NACOR) developed the Optical Sciences 1 – Eyeglasses Examination and Optical Sciences 2 – Advanced Practice Contact Lens Examination as a vehicle to measure competencies of those individuals seeking entry to practice as an optician. The objective was to develop an examination that will be accepted across Canada.

Information about the National examination contents and the process can be obtained by calling the NACOR office at 1-866-949-1950 or by visiting NACOR.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to take the NACOR Exam candidates must have completed and passed an accreditated education program or gone through the proper process deemed appropriate by the Registration Committee.

Candidates must be registered as a Student Optician with the SCO in order to challenge the national exam.

A student shall be permitted three attempts to pass the NACOR licensing examination in opticianry or contact lens technique. Where a person is unsuccessful on the third attempt, that person shall be required to take a further course of training approved by the council and upon completion shall be granted permission from the council to again take the NACOR licensing examination.

Where a person has completed the approved course and not attempted the NACOR examination for a period of three years, the person shall be required to take a future course of training approved by the council and upon completion shall again be granted permission from the council to take the NACOR licensing examination.

STUDENTS - UPDATE ON FALL EXAMINATIONS

The following information is a brief update on the fall sittings of the national examinations. NACOR and the provincial regulatory boards are committed to hosting fall sessions of the national exams. The health of examination candidates and examiners is a top priority and we are actively working together to ensure that we will be able to comply with health guidelines regarding group size, physical distancing, and infection control in all host provinces. Due to current restrictions some of the traditional examination locations will not be available for fall examinations and we are working on securing suitable locations for these exams.

At this time, dates for the fall exams have not been confirmed, further information will be released in late August. Candidates that have not already sent in an application form to NACOR, and are planning on sitting the exam in the fall, are asked to send their application form to exam@nacor.ca.

The NACOR office will not process any examination fees until a candidate has confirmed that they plan to attend the examination on the date set for their province.

NACOR and the provincial regulatory bodies understand that this is a stressful situation for all recent graduates and we are committed to getting you more information as soon as it is confirmed.
